Dani - Alright first question: How long have you been a photographer and what made you want to become one?
Tom Danger Savage - I've always loved taking pictures, but have only been focusing on it since 2010. I just enjoyed all the amazing costumes and characters at cons and wanted to take photos of them. As an avid anime, comic, and sci-fi fan it was like the characters coming to life in pictures.
D- So, as a cosplay photographer, the fandom is what got you interested in that area of work?
T- There are a lot of people who love these characters, and are passionate in portraying them not just in appearance, but in personality, and that is inspiring and I try very hard to capture that in my work.
D- Awesome. So, besides cosplay, what other areas of photography do you like to focus on?
T- I like casual shoots in places in Toronto. Sometimes just walking and exploring, and finding new and awesome places to shoot. I also like shooting action figures and models, as geeky as it sounds.
D- Doesn't sound geeky at all. Now every photographer has a favourite type of camera they always use. What is your favourite model to use and why?
T- A Nikon d3200. It's my second Nikon and I love them. I actually discovered that they made the 3200 in red, and went around all over the GTA to find it. Silly, I know, but red makes everything cooler.
D- Nice, so now for a tough question, or maybe it will be an easy one for you, but what is the best part about being a photographer, and the worst, or not so nice part about it?
T- Best part is when a model tells you that they love the shots. When they get excited about it I can't help but get excited too. The worst part? Sometimes I push myself further then I probably should. Sometimes at cons I book myself ragged just trying to accommodate everyone, and then after the con I feel like the living dead... I suppose it is worth it though.
D- It is, and you do such amazing work, but in your opinion are cosplay photographers getting enough recognition for their work, or is there more people could be doing to spread the word?
T- I found models are usually pretty eager to hype their photographers. A great cosplay photograph is a team effort, and I think a lot of people know what goes into it.
D- Not sure if you've been asked this before, but if someone wanted to get into photography, especially working at cons and such, what advice would you give?
T- I'd say just do it. Conventions are a great place to get experience and make contacts. Just get out there, be respectful, and have fun.
D- And finally if people wanted to see more of your awesome work where would they go to see it?
T- They can find my work on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/everagestudios, and Deviant Art: http://everage.deviantart.com/
D- Thanks again for letting me interview you T- No problem it was my pleasure
